New song: “A Dove Sheathed with Silver” (Psalm 68 & Ephesians 4:8 & 11)
This song, which includes words for group worship, features both Psalm 68 and Ephesians 4.
In Psalm 68 the word of God is proclaimed. Psalm 68 contains a beautiful description of a magnificent dove, covered with silver and gold (verse 13). Psalm 68:18 foretells the mighty defeat of the devil by Jesus on the cross, followed by his resurrection and ascension when the devil, his defeated foe, finally became his ‘captive’.
Ephesians 4:7-12 refers to the same triumphant defeat. It explains that Jesus, once he had ascended, gave spiritual gifts to men (the spoils of the war won against Satan) to equip the church to be the body of Christ.
We believe that the magnificent dove in Psalm 68 describes the presence of the Holy Spirit, hinting at the great empowering of believers that would take place on the day of Pentecost and beyond! We continue to proclaim the good news that Jesus is our savior, he has set us free from the devil and he gives us spiritual gifts to build his earthly kingdom.
Let us rejoice in him!
